June R. Kirkwood
June R. Kirkwood was born Doris June Lorraine Rew on December 16, 1924 to Albert Oldham Rew and Doris Amelia Blasing in Pasadena, California. June spent her youth in southern California and many summers of her life at their home in Lake Arrowhead. During her active life June was an avid water and snow skier. She helped hundreds of children including her own enjoy the thrill of skiing. She founded a Ski Club in Tustin, California in 1965 called TUSKI. Every summer she would invite all her friends and children to her home in Lake Arrowhead and teach them to ski and enjoy being outdoors. Her love of helping others was exemplified in many ways throughout her life. She enjoyed cooking and always fed you if you were hungry.
June joined the “WAVES” in World War II, where she began professionally caring for others. June then came to Aspen in the winter of ‘47/’48 and was a true ski bum. June received her nursing degree at CU. Her career was very diverse ranging from free clinics and ER’s to the Public Health Department. During her early time in Aspen she started a family and lived and worked with the Mace’s at Toklat in Ashcroft. After raising her kids in Orange County and Lake Arrowhead, she returned to Aspen 1974 where she started Aspen’s first health food restaurant “The Little Kitchen” with her daughters Karen and Cindi. She also anchored one of the first local shows on Grassroots TV called “High Level Wellness” for 8 years. June volunteered for many years with the Aspen Thrift Shop, Response, St. Mary’s and many other organizations in the Aspen area. June’s love of the theater was one of her many passions and she played many roles in Aspen productions. June was also a nanny for many special children and gave her undying love and cared for them dearly. June was a woman with a heart that knew no bounds. She will be remembered for her generosity, her warm smile, her giving nature and her love for life and people. She passed peacefully in the arms of her children on November 18, 2013 at Heritage Park Care Center. June Kirkwood is survived by four children Chris, Scott, Karen, and Cindi and her three grandchildren, Nicolas, Lara Jane Thomas, and Corey. The Celebration of her Life will be announced at a later time.
