Joyce H. Gould

December 14, 1933 — June 30, 2017

Joyce Gould (1933-2017), former long-time resident of Aspen passed away in Grand Junction on Friday evening, June 30th at the age of 83. She is survived by two children and two grand-children, residing in California. Joyce was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and moved to Aspen ca. 1957, from attending the University of Washington in Seattle. She became one of the first female downhill ski instructors on Aspen Mountain, and met her husband, Dr. Virgil Gould, in the early months of 1958 while giving him and a group of his friends a skiing lesson; they were married later that autumn at The Aspen Community Church. After retiring from the Aspen Skiing Company in 1970, Joyce was active in the community, playing a central role in creating the Aspen Historical Society and Museum, and she served as that organization’s first president. She also served the local school district in by-law and teacher-hiring committees, and was a regular lover of the summer music festival at the Aspen Music Tent. Private memorial services have been conducted for Joyce and she is laid to rest in the Aspen Valley, her beautiful home for many years.
