Johannes Samuel Haarklou
The one and only “Yoman” – Johan was true to his own creed. A remarkable mix of sensitivity and resilience, Johan passed away in Bellingham, Washington. He was 42 years old.
He spent his last couple of years attending Bellingham Technical College, while pursuing a degree in Geographical Information Systems. Self reliant and sober, he found a way to fund his own studies earning the respect and affection of teachers, counselors, tutors and fellow students.
Johan was born in Aspen living his young life in the Roaring Fork Valley, riding, hiking, skiing and pursuing adventures with his beloved brother, Selig, and his family and friends around the state. Johan discovered the sea in his teens while a crewman on a tall ship sailing from Nantucket to Bermuda. His love for the ocean remained with him as he crewed on various sailboats in the Northwest. He spent time performing for donations on the Burke Gilman Trail in Seattle as the ever popular and sometimes funny teller of “Jokes for Folks”,
He will be remembered for being smart, finding humor in almost every situation, even as he struggled to navigate ordinary moments in daily life. His love for the Earth, his magic touch with animals, his talent for chess and his love and loyalty for his family and friends and theirs for him will always be remembered. He is missed every day.
The family is planning a memorable “Yomorial” for Johan in April. Please stay tuned for details. We plan to celebrate and honor our “Yoman” with laughter and tears, songs and dance.
