Don Sheeley

Don Sheeley died January 22 in Philadelphia due to complications from back surgery. He was 68.

Don moved to Aspen in 1970 and quickly became embedded in the community. He began to share adventures with his future wife Jill and also teamed up with the City of Aspen to start the Aspen Sailing School.

In the 1970s, Don loved working as a patroller at Snowmass and a volunteer for Aspen Mountain Rescue largely because of the frequent opportunities to help others. Don and Jill founded the Aspen Activities Center, a brochure distribution company they ran for 35 years. To his delight, their daughter, Courtney, was born in 1986.

Don had a knack for cutting through red tape to help local businesses and was an active on a number of boards, including the Aspen Chamber Resort Association and Aspen’s Sister Cities Program.

Don’s extracurricular pursuits included most outdoor sports and spending time with family and friends.

Don is survived by Jill; Courtney and her husband, Chris Wyckoff; sister, Bev Ruliffson, brothers Barry Ruliffson and Ron Sheeley; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial will be held at The Hotel Jerome on Thursday, February 16 at 4 pm.
