Chiara Del Piccolo
Chiara Del Piccolo, our beloved and beautiful daughter and sister, passed away too soon on August 26, 2018. Born October 4, 1991, she spent her early years roaming the eastern plains of Colorado before moving to the Roaring Fork Valley, where she developed her great curiosity and passion for the world around her. An accomplished academic, Chiara graduated from Basalt High School as Valedictorian in 2010, and from Williams College as a double major in 2014. Her pursuit of education took her to Portland, Oregon for graduate school, where she later wielded her pen as an online writer. An integral member of the cross country and track teams at BHS and Williams, Chiara was the 2011 NCAA Division III Cross Country National Champion, a two-time All-American, and is the current BHS school record-holder in the 1600m and 3200m.
Chiara loved running, writing, the NPR Sunday puzzle, and spending time with her family and friends. Her wit, smile, keen observations, and love of traditions will be deeply missed by a large, extended family and many friends.
Chiara was preceded in death by her grandfather, Richard Wheeler. She is survived by her parents, Dario and Suzanne; her sister Nuala; her brothers, Giulio and Ivano; her grandparents, Mario and Juliana Del Piccolo and Mary Ann Enos; and numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 8 at 1:30 pm at Saint Mary of the Crown Church in Carbondale, Colorado, with a reception to follow at the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Basalt Education Foundation (PO Box 1278, Basalt, CO 81621; basaltedu.org). Donations will be used to establish a scholarship in Chiara’s memory for future scholar athletes from Basalt High School.
