Charles F. Smith Jr

Charles F. Smith Jr. died March 9th 2015. Charles was born October 11, 1920 in New York City, New York, to parents Charles F. Smith Sr. and Nina MacLeod Smith. He loved his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his lovely wife, Margaret “Peggy” Lewis Smith, passing in May of 2013. They were friends, companions, and lovers for 76 years. They were married for 70 years. He was a graduated from Clarkson College of Technology, Potsdam, New York, in mechanical engineering. His first job was in Aviation. He worked on the “Flying Wing”, XB-35 Bomber, designing parts for the power plant section of the airplane. He served in World War II as an Aerial Photographer and Mechanical Draftsman, stationed in Manila, The Philippines.

They loved to travel throughout the United States, Canada and down through the Panama Canal. Charles loved to ski and fish and golf. He and his lovely wife, Peggy, built Gateway Guest Ranch in1960 on Snowmass creek. Selling that ranch in 1966 and buying a cattle ranch on East Sopris creek. He was a State of Colorado licensed guide, for big game hunting. His other occupations were as an Assistant Treasurer in the Sales Tax Division of Colorado, and a greens keeper at Aspen Country Club. They both retired in 1976. He is survived by his three children, Lee Margaret Crow, Charles “Mac” Smith and Nina MacLeod Freda.
