Carl Russell Bergman

Carl R. Bergman passed away Sunday, January 28, 2018, at his home in Aspen at the age of 85. He was born in South Bend, IN on April 16, 1932 to Russell C. and Irma F. Bergman. He was a graduate of Purdue University School of Pharmacy in 1956 and a member of Theta Xi Fraternity. Upon graduation, he joined his father in the family pharmacy business. He was married to Catherine M. Hausmann in April of 1957.

After skiing in Europe, the Bergmans made plans to move West and by God’s grace, Aspen became their home in 1963. Carl worked for Walt Matthew as a pharmacist for two years and then purchased Matthew Drug and changed the name to Carl’s Pharmacy. Then he built and opened the Miners’ Building in 1976.

He was involved in many civic activities over the years in those early days, and once he became involved in the Aspen Historical Society, his attention was devoted there. He was instrumental in developing the Holden Marolt Mining and Ranching Museum and was still there a couple of weeks ago helping to finish the latest outside display.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Katie, daughter, Linda Brining (Robert); son, Robert Bergman (Rose) and 2 grandsons, Justin Bergman and Daniel Bergman.

A memorial service will be held at Crossroads Church in Aspen at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 10th with a reception to follow at the Hotel Jerome. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Holden Marolt Mining and Ranching Museum of the Aspen Historical Society, 620 W. Bleeker, Aspen, CO 81611 or Crossroads Church, 726 W. Francis, Aspen, CO 81611
