Betty Byers Coates, 87, of San Antonio died July 5. She was born in Wichita Kansas on February 2, 1927. Betty attended East High school in Wichita and graduated from Kansas University in 1949. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. The same year she married George Byers and they lived in Kansas City until his death in 1972. In 1974 Betty moved to Aspen and in 1977 married Nick Coates. She opened an interior design firm, Byers Three Interiors, in 1975 which was responsible for the interiors of over 200 of Aspen’s early condominiums plus several commercial buildings. For eight years she would spend as much as seven months each year sailing the world on their 44 foot cutter, Expectation. Betty is survived by her husband, Nick, of San Antonio, daughter Jeni Arneson of Fort Collins, Colorado; son, George Byers of San Antonio, stepdaughters Kim Coates of Aspen and Candace Wallace of Stillwell Kansas and stepson Jeff Coates of San Diego and eight grandchildren.
