‘Zorro’ leaves his mark on Winterskol

The mark of Zorro will be on the Wintersköl fireworks this year.Antonio Banderas, the actor who starred in “The Mask of Zorro,” has pitched in through his new “men’s fragrance” company to help fund Wintersköl.The Aspen Chamber Resort Association said that Spirit Antonio Banderas is a “premier sponsor” for Wintersköl and the “presenting sponsor” for the annual fireworks blowout during the event. Spirit is being touted as “a new fragrance for men” by Banderas.ACRA wouldn’t disclose how much Banderas contributed to Wintersköl.In addition to contributing funds, Banderas will play an active role during the event.”He’s going to lead the torchlight descent himself down Aspen Mountain before the fireworks,” said John Rigney, managing director of event marketing for the Aspen Skiing Co. Banderas will be joined by “little buddies” from The Buddy Program.Rigney, a member of the ACRA board of directors, said he approached Banderas’ organization for help after ACRA President Hana Pevny disclosed at a meeting in December that a lack of sponsorship funds threatened to cancel Wintersköl events. Rigney said he thought he could help.”I know they wanted to do something in Aspen and the timing worked out,” Rigney said.Banderas and his wife, Melanie Griffith, are frequent Aspen visitors. He gained worldwide fame when he played the hand-picked successor of Zorro in the 1998 movie, “The Mask of Zorro.” More recently, he was the voice of Puss ‘n Boots, including sounds of spitting up a hair ball, in “Shrek 2.”Several local businesses and individuals have also contributed to Wintersköl, including Ink! coffee, which chipped in $10,000 for the third straight year.Scott Condon’s e-mail address is scondon@aspentimes.com.
