Youths face drug charges

Aspen Times Staff Report

Three Basalt Middle School students are facing charges related to possession of marijuana or drug paraphernalia after a tip to school officials spurred an investigation, according to authorities.

The kids, two of them 14 years old and one of them 13, will face charges in Basalt Municipal Court, according to Basalt prosecutor Sherry Caloia. Because they are juveniles, there was the option of filing felony charges in district court.

“We will try not to treat this in an overblown fashion,” she said.

Caloia and Basalt Police Department spokeswoman Betty Nye were reluctant to discuss details of the incident because the case involves juveniles. Caloia said school officials conducted an investigation based on a tip, then called Basalt police after marijuana was discovered at the school.

One of the juveniles was charged with possession of less than one ounce of marijuana. The other two were charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, said Caloia.

She wouldn’t disclose whether the youths were boys or girls other than to say there were “some of each.”
