Youthful democracy

Dear Editor:Kids Voting would like to thank the Garfield County commissioners for generously contributing $4,000 in start-up funds to Kids Voting, Colorado, Three Rivers Region.Kids Voting, in its first year valleywide, depends on the support of the communities, the schools, the teachers and finally, and most importantly, the parents. We are urging the parents of children in schools from Parachute to Basalt to take their children to the polls on Nov. 2. Kids will vote, in their own “mock” election with a simplified ballot, in the Kids Voting booth, located at the official polling places. What better way to raise a generation of informed voters than to take them to the polls? This nationwide nonpartisan program has the added benefit of “trickle up” democracy by increasing the voter participation among adults by 3 to 10 percent. Kids literally drag their parents to the polls! The teachers are registering all 10,000 of our valley students during October with a Kids Voting registration card that students can take to the polls on Election Day. Thanks to the financial support of the communities, Kids Voting is off to a strong start in the schools. With the participation of parents, we will reach our goal of giving our children an authentic voting experience.Thank you so much, commissioners, for putting your funds toward the Kids Voting program in the schools.Brenda Buchananassociate directorKids Voting
