Your choice

Aspen Times writer

Dear Editor:The “Local State of Mind” topic of the week is “choice.” LSM is a public forum for participatory democracy on issues of global, international, national and regional concern. Each week members of our community and guests, of all ages, orientations and persuasions are invited to discuss the topic of the week: at a public meet-up taped every Wednesday from 5:306:30 p.m. at GrassRoots TV, 110 E. Hallam St., by submitting letters to the editor, op/ed pieces or cartoons to their newspapers or comments to the Tipline; and/or calling into their radio stations. For me the question of choice is the same one that Gloria Feldt asks in her book, “The War on Choice,” which is: “How much longer will a woman have a right to her own body?” Anti-choice allies now control the White House, both houses of Congress, most state legislatures, 23 governors and, potentially, the Supreme Court. While 90 percent of Americans support access to family planning, 80 percent support comprehensive sexuality education and 70 percent believe abortion should be legal, right-wing extremists have enacted 335 new state laws restricting a woman’s right to choose in just the last eight years, 87 percent of U.S. counties have no safe abortion provider and 24 states have mandatory delays and state-prepared anti-choice propaganda, despite the objection of the American Medical Association.Enough! We took back our bodies once and we can do it again – this time from the grassroots! This has been my voice, what’s yours?Tricia McKenzieAspen
