Yes to 4A, for RFTA

Dear Editor:

I am supporting the RFTA tax question this fall because RFTA represents our best and most realistic chance of resolving traffic congestion in both the short and long run.

I have attended hundreds of state meetings on transportation over the past decade and a half, both as a member of the State Transportation Advisory Committee and the governor’s Blue Ribbon Transportation Finance and Implementation Panel.

RFTA’s vision for a BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) is acknowledged around the state as an alternative superior to building more lanes and inviting more vehicles into our communities.

Just recently, RFTA’s application for $621,000 to fund improved traffic-light timing was ranked fifth in competition among 42 statewide projects submitted for transit funding.

Leveraging further state funding to improve the Highway 82 corridor is mush more possible with local voter support for RFTA and BRT. Communities without transit agencies or adequate funding and vision for those agencies are unlikely to obtain such funds.

The community goal of maintaining vehicle trips into Aspen at the 1993 level of about 23,000 per day has been met by diverting new traffic onto RFTA. This has averted the need for expensive new parking spaces ($75,000 each) and considerable greenhouse gas emissions.

While I have supported two Entrance to Aspen solutions, we still need to upgrade the bus service no matter what alternative the voters ultimately choose. A YES vote for 4A helps maintain a survive we can be proud of and helps lay the foundation for an environmentally friendly, efficient transportation system.

Please vote early at the clerk’s office this week from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day until Friday, plus extended hours on Halloween (Friday, Oct. 31) with the office open until 6 p.m.
