Xcel seeks 15 percent rate hike
Aspen, CO Colorado
DENVER ” Xcel Energy customers in Colorado, including those in the Roaring Fork Valley, could see their electric rates rise 15 percent starting April 1st because of higher natural gas prices.
Xcel Energy is requesting the increase from the first of April through June 30th. Utility officials say wholesale natural gas prices have nearly quadrupled the last six months due in part to more gas being shipped out of Colorado through the Rockies Express pipeline.
The pipeline has opened up more markets where Rockies natural gas fetches higher prices.
Typical residential customers will see their bill rise $8.53 next month to $65.02. Business customers’ monthly bills will increase $13.96 to $104.26.
Xcel Energy’s service area includes parts of the lower Roaring Fork Valley and Interstate 70 corridor, including Carbondale, New Castle, Silt and Rifle.
