Wrong time for tax

Dear Editor:

With regard to the 1 percent bed tax that the Chamber of Commerce is trying to put through on lodging in Aspen, they feel we need this as a marketing tool to bring more visitor business to town. Having been in the lodging business for 38 years, I feel this is wrong timing for this idea because of the bad economy and recession, and will not help the problem.

Potential guests who call us are now asking what is the lowest rate we can give them and how much is the tax? In all the years I’ve been in business, people have never asked that question, particularly about the amount of tax we would charge, which would be higher than it is now. So I and many others I have talked to agree this is not a good idea.

We have belonged to the Chamber and Stay Aspen Snowmass for years, but unfortunately they do not book us very much. Most of our bookings are through the Internet (which I’m sure may be not as good for them), as people look for lodging deals, etc. on the Internet now. Fortunately for us we get lots of wonderful repeat guests.

I also think this issue should be put to a vote for all.
