Writers make an impact

Dear Editor:

On behalf of Roaring Fork High School, I would like to publicly thank the Aspen Writers’ Foundation for bringing two dynamic writers to our school.

Ishmael Beah and Louis Gakumba spoke to our students and faculty about their childhood experiences with war in Sierra Leone and Rwanda respectively. Their eloquent, yet candid accounts of their experiences helped us better understand the effects of war, especially on children, and gave us an engaging perspective on those things we often take for granted in the United States. It was inspiring to hear these young men portray such unbridled optimism and hope in the face of such harsh circumstances.

Our students are now having conversations about the miracle of human resilience and the importance of settling differences peacefully. A sincere thank you to Sara Halterman, Julia Comins Pickerell, Greg Pickerell, and of course, Louis Gakumaba and Ishmael Beah for a most memorable experience.
