World Cup a Norton priority

One of John Norton’s priorities in his new position (see relatedstory) will be lobbying for a World Cup ski race next season andre-establishing Aspen as a regular stop on the circuit. “We continue to work with the U.S. Ski Team and the FIS,” saidNorton, referring to international ski racing’s governing body.He and other local officials will go to FIS meetings in Sloveniain May “to try to nail down the race.” Norton said he is more optimistic now than he was one month agoabout Aspen’s chances to land races again next season. Aspen hostedmen’s World Cup races last November for the first time since March1995, but appeared to be the odd resort out for next season. But now, Norton said, his talks with Ski Team officials lead himto believe Aspen could land men’s races on Thanksgiving weekend, sandwiched between World Cup stops at Park City and Vail. Ski Team officials have acknowledged they want Aspen back on theschedule and are working to do what they can. But every year thereare more ski resorts applying to be venues than there are availableraces. The FIS is reluctant to schedule more than four races in NorthAmerica. Some observers believe Aspen would have to benefit fromCanada’s loss of a race. “I think we’ll have World Cup,” Norton said.
