RULISON, Colo. A worker died Thursday morning in an accident on a natural gas well pad off County Road 301 between Battlement Mesa and Rulison. The accident occurred on an EnCana Oil & Gas (USA) drilling site, said EnCana spokesman Doug Hock. He said the victim was working for a subcontractor of Nabors Drilling, which is itself a contractor for EnCana.Neither Hock nor Garfield County sheriffs spokesperson Tanny McGinnis had information Thursday on the victims name, age or place of residence. Both said that details of the accident remained sketchy Thursday. Hock said he believed it occurred as workers were preparing to move a rig sometime before 10 a.m. He said the victim apparently was helping move a compressor unit with a forklift when he was crushed by a piece of equipment that detached from the forklift.McGinnis said she understood the man was struck by a boom or other piece of heavy equipment. The county coroners office pronounced the victim dead at the scene, Hock said.McGinnis said the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration was en route to the scene to investigate the incident.Said Hock, Were investigating this along with our contractors and the appropriate authorities to understand what happened and to make sure this type of thing doesnt happen again.
