Woody Creek, Aspen make top 10 on Forbes most expensive zip codes list

Staff report

315 Lake Ave., Aspen

Woody Creek and Aspen are two of the top 10 most expensive zip codes in the United States, according to Forbes 500 Most Expensive Zip Codes in America, a list released Tuesday.

Woody Creek takes the No. 4 spot with a median home price of $7.3 million. Aspen comes in ninth, with a median home price of $5 million.

"The recession is in the distant rearview mirror," Aspen/Snowmass real estate broker Mark Lewis told Forbes, adding that most of the buyers of these properties are not year-round residents. The buyers "largely come from the financial sector, most notably hedge-fund managers," according to Lewis.

The most expensive zip code on the list is 94027, in Atherton, California, with a median home price of $10.5 million.

The Forbes ranking is based on asking prices rather than closed sales. Forbes works with housing market data provider Altos Research to come up with the list.

"We believe the former is in many ways a better barometer of the current market — the sample size for sales prices is smaller and the data is older given the time it takes for transactions to become public," according to Forbes.
