Woman survives tumble off Fryingpan Road

BASALT – A Fryingpan Valley resident survived what investigators say was an intentional effort to drive over a steep embankment on Fryingpan Road on Sunday.

A woman who was the sole occupant of the pick-up tumbled 75 to 100 yards down the steep embankment just below Ruedi Dam at 10:10 a.m., according to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office. The pick-up came to an improbable stop – nose down with the bed protruding into the air. The truck was perched like a balanced rock commonly seen in various locations of canyon country in western Colorado and Utah. The accident was reported by an angler who was fishing below the dam.

Ten firefighters and medics from Basalt Fire Department responded. They used a low-angle uphaul system to haul the victim up the step slope, the sheriff’s office said. She was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital with injuries that weren’t life threatening, authorities said.

“The 31 year old female driver, a local Frying Pan valley resident, had intentionally driven her vehicle off the side of the road in an attempt to commit suicide, according to a family member on scene,” the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

Deputy Alex Burchetta said the truck appeared to follow the contour of the slope after leaving the road. The roof of the cab didn’t suffer any damage so it apparently didn’t roll, he said, but it might have flipped end over end. A wire fence prevented the pick-up from going over a second steep embankment down to the stream bed, Burchetta said.
