Wise beyond his years

Aspen Times writer

Dear Editor:

Mr. Ferguson of Dallas points out that visitors to Aspen are of many different nationalities and beliefs. Therefore, he concludes, that the only visible religious buildings should be of the religion of which he approves.

How does this accommodate the needs of our culturally diverse tourists or of our Jewish population, which, I am guessing, is well over a thousand. He seems unhappy that we should have a “proud presence.”

It is understandable that, as a primary resident of Dallas, he is not aware that Rabbi Mintz, after being ordained, has been a full-time spiritual leader of Aspen, where he has resided all the years since with his wife and children. That would mean that he is an Aspen Rabbi rather than a “New York Rabbi.”

Rabbi Mintz’ “agenda” does have “serious implications” for so many of us who are grateful for his welcome and warmly welcoming presence, his considerable knowledge and absolute integrity. His philosophy is one of inclusion rather than exclusion.

His “agenda” is to help people in many ways, and this he does every day, quietly and in the kindest, most down-to-earth manner. He is 100 percent committed to providing for the needs of Aspen’s Jewish community in a friendly educational atmosphere.

Rabbi Mintz is a very courageous young man with wisdom well beyond his years. Everyone who has come to know him well has felt his sincere, positive attitude. That may be why, for the first time in Aspen’s history, we can look forward to a warm, wonderful community center which is our own every day of the week.

Raising my family and living here for 32 years, I can recognize a good thing!

Leah Stein
