Winterskl in Aspen kicks into high gear

ASPEN – The town’s annual Winterskl celebration officially kicked into gear Thursday and hits full stride Friday with the ever-popular Soupskl competition.That will cap off a day of activities that includes the sculpting of those big blocks of snow dotting the downtown pedestrian malls.Saturday, the Aspen Chamber Resort Association has arranged a host of family activities, all centered on the Cooper Avenue Mall and at the corner of Cooper and Galena, replacing the traditional parade. The area will bustle with music and more throughout the day, leading up to the evening torchlight parade on Little Nell followed by fireworks.Sunday brings more fun, including the Hike for Hope uphill race at Buttermilk.The weekend also brings several evening performances to Aspen, starting Friday with the 10 p.m. Snow Jam concert at Belly Up Aspen, featuring The Spazmatics. Also today, Nathan McEuen and Friends take the Wheeler Opera House stage at 7:30 p.m., and “13 – The Musical” will be presented at the Aspen District Theatre at 7 p.m.Saturday has The Punch Brothers at the Wheeler (9 p.m.) and Tea Leaf Green with Elmwood at Belly Up (10 p.m.), plus a second performance of “13 – The Musical” at 7 p.m. at the district theatre. On Sunday, it’s The Wailers at 9 p.m. at Belly Up and an eTown taping with John Hiatt and Brandi Carlile at the Wheeler at 7 p.m.
