ASPEN ” A winter storm moving into western Colorado on Sunday could bring more than a foot of new snow to the high country by Monday evening.

Accumulations of 10 to 20 inches are possible above 9,000 feet, according to the National Weather Service. A winter storm warning is in effect from Sunday at noon to midnight on Monday for the mountains, including Aspen and Snowmass.

Snow will become widespread by Sunday afternoon, according to the weather service. The heaviest snowfall is expected Sunday night.

Southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 50 mph will cause blowing snow and whiteout conditions. Gusts approaching 75 mph are possible in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado, the weather service warned.

In the meanwhile, Snowmass picked up 4 inches of new snow over the past 24 hours, thanks to light snow in the area on Saturday. Aspen Mountain and Aspen Highlands both got 2 inches, while Buttermilk picked up 1 inch, according to the Aspen Skiing Co.’s Sunday morning snow report.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center report for Sunday, Feb. 24:
