Winter storm heads for Aspen

ASPEN ” A winter storm poised to hit Aspen by Saturday morning could bring more than a foot of new snow to local slopes, according to the National Weather Service.

A winter storm warning is in effect for the Elk Mountains surrounding Aspen and Snowmass, starting at 6 a.m. Saturday and continuing until 6 p.m. Sunday.

Friday’s forecast calls for cloudy skies and a 40 percent chance of snow, increasing to 50 percent overnight on Friday. Snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are predicted Saturday, with highs in the 30s and southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph, gusting up to 45 mph, according to the weather service.

Another 4 to 8 inches is forecast Saturday night and 3 to 5 inches is expected Sunday, with highs in the 20s and southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph.

“Moderate” snow accumulation is forecast Sunday night and Monday with highs in the 20s, according to the weather service.
