Winter storm heading for Aspen

ASPEN ” A winter storm warning is in effect for the central mountains of Colorado, including the Aspen area, where heavy snows and gusty winds are forecast Wednesday night and Thursday.

A mixture of rain and snow is likely at lower elevations, including isolated thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service is calling for 3 to 5 inches of new snow in Aspen and Snowmass on Wednesday afternoon, with southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph, gusting to 35 mph. Snow, heavy at times, is predicted Wednesday night, with accumulations of 4 to 8 inches.

Snow will continue Thursday, with additional accumulations of 4 to 7 inches and northwest winds of 10 to 20 mph, gusting to around 35 mph. Another 1 to 3 inches of snow is possible Thursday night before the snowfall tapers off on Friday, according to the weather service.

Clearing skies are forecast for the weekend, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the 40s on Saturday and of 45 to 55 on Sunday in Aspen, according to the weather service. Closing day on the slopes of Aspen Mountain and Snowmass is Sunday.
