Wilson, Clarke are patriots

Aspen Times writer

Dear Editor:Henry Catto states in his letter to the editor (Aspen Times, July 13) that the speakers at the State of the World conference who were critical of G. W. Bush were interested in “… book royalties and lecture fees.” To assert that the motivation of Wilson and Clarke is greed shows his unwillingness to even look at the shortcomings of the Bush administration.May I remind Mr. Catto, a former ambassador under Bush the First, that great patriots have disagreed with the government and, in fact, our country was founded by dissidents? Both Joseph Wilson and Richard Clarke are men of stature who have served our country with honor. Clarke is a brilliant American with an impeccable record of service under both Democratic and Republican administrations. As a Bush advisor on counter terrorism, he felt compelled to expose the incompetence of this administration. Ambassador Wilson could have remained silent and not exposed G. W. Bush’s lies in his speech to American people when trying to persuade us to go to war. He could have remained silent when the White House exposed his wife as a spy. Mr. Wilson spoke out. These men are patriots.Mr. Catto disregards them and accuses them of lining their pockets. I may not agree with the opinions of the speakers at the conference, but I admire their courage and would never question that their motivation is love of country.N. L. WalkerAspen
