Willits Lane roundabout due for work

Aspen Times staff report
Aspen, CO, Colorado

BASALT – Work on a $1.1 million roundabout in Basalt at the intersection of Willits Lane and East Valley Road could start by the end of this week and continue into mid-November.

The project will require the closure of the intersection, according to representatives of the town government and development team. Traffic entering City Market will have to use the main El Jebel intersection to access the supermarket from Highway 82. Traffic destined for Willits Town Center businesses such as El Korita and Smoke will have to come off Highway 82 at Original Road and use East Valley Road or approach on Willits Lane from the south.

Traffic will not be able to turn onto lower Willits Lane from Highway 82 or use Willits Lane to get to the highway during the project. A “pre-notice” to businesses in the area said work on the roundabout will not begin before Friday and will not continue longer than Nov. 14; the contractor has financial incentive to finish earlier than that.

The town government will chip in $500,000 for the project. It is using revenues from a real estate transfer assessment at Willits. The fund is dedicated to street improvements. The Willits Town Center owner developer, Mariner Real Estate Management, will pay the balance, an estimated $600,000.
