Why you should vote for Dee Malone

Dear Editor:

I have seen many changes take place in Pitkin County over the past three decades. Some of these changes have been good, but most are the ugly result of urban development throughout the valley: loss of our open spaces, deterioration of our air and water resources, and fragmentation and loss of wildlife habitat. These impacts could have been much worse were it not for certain commissioners along the way who were particularly strong defenders of our environmental quality. During the last 12 years, Dorothea Farris has provided critical environmental leadership to the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC). I believe we are indebted to Dorothea for the many actions she has taken to maintain the character of the Roaring Fork Valley.

Dorothea is term-limited. That is why Dee Malone and George Newman are running for her seat in Pitkin County District 5. George is well known among certain groups in the county because of his work with Leadership Aspen, the Aspen Chamber Resort Association, the Emma Caucus, and other activities. This gives him a distinct advantage in the race. However, what he and the other commissioner candidates lack (as well as the two seated commissioners not running in this election) is the training and experience of an environmental professional, as well as the strong life-long passion for environmental conservation that Dee Malone has.

Dee would provide the needed environmental leadership to the BOCC. She is intimately familiar with issues surrounding our air and water quality, stream flows, and open spaces. She is a quick study, a hard worker, and will stand up to special interests seeking to erode our environmental quality. She needs your support, and Pitkin County needs Dee Malone. She will actually make a difference in our county government.
