Why Mick? Here’s why

Dear Editor:I’m voting for Mick Ireland for mayor and urge you to as well. Mick has long been a protector of our town’s character, economy and natural environment. Mick Ireland’s consensus building and fair-minded leadership has resulted in a master plan that has garnered $45 million dollars of investment in our airport over the past four years.Mick’s work on growth management as a Pitkin County commissioner has enhanced property values in Aspen, which have increased dramatically over the past decade while he has been in office. Mick has worked to strengthen Pitkin County’s recycling program so that waste haulers could drop collected recyclables at the landfill for free. This subsidy is the only reason Aspen even has a recycling program! Mick has also worked at the local, state and federal level to protect the public lands surrounding us and the water flowing in the Roaring Fork River. But perhaps most important, Mick has worked tirelessly to get representatives who reflect our progressive and environmental values elected to the Colorado state Assembly and Senate, and to our federal senate and congressional delegation. Mick’s efforts through these avenues have had a profoundly positive impact Colorado’s renewable energy, water conservation, transportation funding and public-lands policy. Mick is a problem solver on a regional level, realizing that Aspen will never house all of its own work force, he has worked to develop support for affordable housing throughout our valley. Mick Ireland put tremendous energy into the formation of the valleywide transportation authority for RFTA, which keeps literally millions of cars a year off Aspen streets. This regional experience, perspective and leadership will be ever more important with the pressure our area faces. And Mick Ireland has been there to help me out with every important initiative I’ve ever undertaken, from the vote to turn the Red Brick into an art and recreation center, to the renewal of the RETT to support the Wheeler Opera House, to the two votes to make Burlingame Village affordable housing a reality. Mick has always worked long and hard to make Aspen a better place and to protect and serve the local community. Many of the good things that we today take for granted simply would not have happened without Mick Ireland’s efforts. Please join me voting to protect our hometown by electing a mayor who solves problems with an eye toward long-term needs, not short-term profits, a neighbor who knows that complex problems aren’t solved by glib sound bytes, and who works constantly for everyone’s benefit equally. Please vote for Mick Ireland for mayor on Tuesday, May 8.Rachel E. RichardsAspen
