Where are our priorities?

Dear Editor:

I have been amazed that a town with the financial resources of ours, one that has recently built a state-of-the-art high school, constructed a fabulous recreation center (ARC) and now wants to build a new and improved, different, larger (whatever) tourist building which is purported to bring in an additional $21 million, cannot afford to cover the cost of kindergarten.

Over the years there have been numerous studies on the benefits, almost necessity, of the early start. Head Start is considered a worthwhile program around the country.

I am dismayed about the priorities! This is an expensive city to live in. So why charge the young parents $320 a month – approximately $3,000 per year – so the community can subsidize what next?

Can there possibly be something more important than a 5-year-old?

Let me think: Another bike path? A brick sidewalk?
