Where are our priorities?
I have been amazed that a town with the financial resources of ours, one that has recently built a state-of-the-art high school, constructed a fabulous recreation center (ARC) and now wants to build a new and improved, different, larger (whatever) tourist building which is purported to bring in an additional $21 million, cannot afford to cover the cost of kindergarten.
Over the years there have been numerous studies on the benefits, almost necessity, of the early start. Head Start is considered a worthwhile program around the country.
I am dismayed about the priorities! This is an expensive city to live in. So why charge the young parents $320 a month – approximately $3,000 per year – so the community can subsidize what next?
Can there possibly be something more important than a 5-year-old?
Let me think: Another bike path? A brick sidewalk?
The Aspen City Council directed staff to move forward with the Burlingame early childhood education center, but decided it needs more information on the affordable housing units that are part of the schematic design at a work session Monday.
