What is patriotic?

Dear Editor:In light of the recent news that Citibank is sending 10,000 jobs overseas, I’m compelled to ask a question about patriotism. Is it patriotic for corporations to gut the middle class of this country by outsourcing jobs that should stay here? Is it patriotic for these same corporations to slip through loopholes when it’s tax time? Is it patriotic for corporate entities to fire experienced workers and fill their spots with part-time workers who don’t qualify for health care or overtime? Is it patriotic for the oil companies to gouge out the largest profits ever on the back of the working man? Is it patriotic to support a maniacal administration bent on destruction and misery for thousands of people for the furtherance of Haliburton’s profits? Wake up folks. None of these entities have your best interests at heart. Nor are they patriotic.Patriotism is right here in our valley. Help out the kids. Volunteer. Be a mentor. Sing for the old folks. Waving a flag and supporting inflammatory rhetoric is not patriotic. It is a smoke screen for some of the worst corporate behavior ever.Ezra Jack MaretCarbondale
