Whadjya say, coach?

Dear Editor: Wow … I don’t even know where to start. I want to salute my team for having the guts to succeed when nobody expected them to. We overcame losing our star pitcher the day before our first game. We overcame a culture of losing in past seasons. We overcame people telling us we are not for real. We overcame. The purpose of this letter is to thank all those that helped us through this magical season. You never know what the future holds, and this opportunity may never come again. (Although it might.) Bruce Matherly, my co-coach: A lot of people don’t know the stuff he has done just to get the program to a playable level. When you have a couple bats, a few baseballs, half of some uniforms, and a field that needs work … you can’t win. Bruce turned that all around. He gave us a chance. He did the dirty work, and I got to do the easy stuff in relation. Thanks, Bruce.Mike Green, thanks for taking a chance on me. I appreciate it more than you know. The Basalt parents: you guys traveled to ridiculous places to cheer us on. There’s nothing better then being miles from home, and seeing familiar faces. Thank you! Mark Hinch, your tireless field prep for us was amazing. We loved playing there, and a lot of that had to do with how well groomed you kept it. Thank you. Jon Maletz and The Aspen Times: Your articles were so well-written and fun to look forward to. I heard from many people in college that they followed us through the articles on the Internet. Thanks again.I also want to thank all the people that were there for us during this past year. There are simply too many to name, but trust me, we know who each and every one of you are, and we can’t thank you enough! Hook ’em ‘Horns! Rick RyanBasalt High School baseball coach
