Well played, fellas

Dear Editor:I’d like to offer my congratulations to the Aspen High School Skiers ice hockey team for a season well played, and for bringing the state title deep into the heart of the mountains for the first time ever. Excellent work, men.As an on-ice official certified to work Colorado high school hockey games, and a local representative of the Colorado Hockey Officials Association, I would like to publicly thank Aspen High School athletic director Carol Sams and head coach Al Butler. Carol has always supported the game officials in their endeavor to enforce the rules of the game and good sportsmanship. Coach Butler approached me before the season and asked me to address the team with regards to the new standard of play adopted by the Colorado High School Activities Association, which was enforced for the first time this year. Coach Butler gave me his assurances that he would set a positive tone and support the tighter game the officials would call. The integrity of the sport and, ultimately, the kids benefit most when all of the adults supervising youth sports communicate the same message and provide mutual support to one another. Thanks too, to the fans in the stands who may not have always agreed with our on-ice calls, but who nonetheless allowed us to do our job.Hamilton TharpNew Castle
