Mountain Mayhem: Ladies’ Night

Katharine Haber with guest speaker and ultrarunning legend Scott Jurek.

On Thursday, May 7, Independence Run & Hike, Carbondale’s specialty running store, hosted “The Healthy Runner,” an event featuring a group of experts in the fitness industry. As part of their Ladies’ Night series, which brings inspiring speakers and locals together for a presentation and conversation, athlete and designer Jenny Jurek was the headlining speaker.

Designing women’s specific clothing and gear for many years now, she’s worked her way up the ranks for a variety of respected outdoor companies, starting with Moonstone and moving on to Montrail, Patagonia, Salomon, Brooks and many others, eventually becoming a freelance designer. For her first-ever speaking engagement, Jurek displayed a demure demeanor when talking about her personal and professional path, though carried on with confidence when explaining her goals as a designer, accommodating for women’s curves with adjustability, style with patterning and sustainability as far as functionality goes.

Scott Jurek was a bonus guest speaker; he is a seven-time winner of the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run, has the second best result for covering the most distance run in 24 hours, was a central character in the bestseller “Born to Run,” and is the author of the bestselling autobiography “Eat and Run.” He can now proudly add the distinction as first male speaker at Independence Run & Hike’s Ladies’ Night.

He described his approach to endurance races and the mental journeys involved with highs and lows throughout, finding adventure and a feeling of empowerment that can be put toward other areas in life.

Additional speakers included Glenwood Springs family physician Dr. Greg Feinsinger who described the benefits of a plant-based diet, which both Jenny and her husband, ultrarunning legend Scott Jurek, follow. Carolyn Parker of Ripple Effect Athlete Training Center and Elinor Fish of Run Wild Retreats led a clinic on strength and form for athletes. And a fashion show featured local models sporting spring and summer outfits for exercise and adventures, all available at the store.

The evening concluded with a generous raffle with prizes from each of the speakers and Independence Run & Hike.
