From the Vault: Hidden gem

One b/w photograph of two people walking along a path. There is a wagon a little ways behind them. Written under the photo is "Conundrum Gulch", and it is dated August 4, 1901.

“Few people realize the varied resources of even Pitkin county let alone that of the New Empire,” proclaimed the Aspen Evening Chronicle on March 5, 1890. “Aspen has a worldwide fame as a mining camp but few people think of praising its virtues as a summer resort. … Not least among the list of home resorts are the hot springs of Conundrum gulch. This place will be, before many years, what Manitou is today. Conundrum has its own attractions and also advantages which no other place possesses. … Conundrum basin has many shade trees and can be made a beautiful place. The springs are known to be medicinal and for bathing purposes are nowhere excelled. Besides the hot springs, there are other springs cold as ice and pure as crystal. The temperature of the hot water is just about 100 degrees.” The image above shows people hiking up a trail in Conundrum Gulch with their wagon parked behind them, circa 1900.
