Weekend X crowd down slightly

Aspen Times Staff

The crowds weren’t quite as extreme at this year’s X Games, at least on Saturday and Sunday.Compared with last year, about 1,000 fewer people attended the games on those days, which are typically the event’s busiest, according to figures ESPN released Tuesday. Final figures will come out today, but it appears the annual increase in crowd numbers slowed this year.Since landing at Buttermilk in 2002, X Games attendance has swelled every year. The 2005 event drew 69,750 spectators over its five-day run, including 25,500 on Saturday and 17,500 on Sunday. The final 2005 total meant 3,250 more people attended than in 2004.This year, 28,250 flocked to the games on Saturday, but Sunday saw “only” 15,800, according to ESPN. Saturday’s high-water mark was about 8,000 people short of the entire attendance during the X Games’ first year here, when 36,000 came out.Friday this year drew about 8,000 fans, while Monday 10,000 were at Buttermilk. Through Monday, 62,150 had attended the games. In 2003, 48,000 spectators saw the made-for-TV spectacle over its five-day run; but the largest increase by far came in 2004, when 66,500 attended, an increase of 18,500 fans from the prior year.Efforts to reach Aspen Skiing Co. and ESPN officials Tuesday were unsuccessful.
