BASALT – The Colorado Wildlife Commission earlier this month approved a request by the town of Basalt to close the Lake Christine Shooting Range two hours earlier on weekend days.

Starting Dec. 1, the range will close at 5 p.m. rather than 7 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The modification means the range is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.

The compromise on hours was worked out by the staffs of the town and Colorado Division of Wildlife. The Wildlife Commission is an 11-member governing board that sets wildlife division policy.

“Commissioners said their intent was to temporarily reduce shooting hours to give the town of Basalt and other interested parties, including the Division of Wildlife, time to examine and implement ways to mitigate noise from the range, after which previous hours would be restored,” the wildlife division said in a statement.

The commission wants a progress report on the noise mitigation efforts by the September 2011 meeting in Steamboat Springs.
