GLENWOOD SPRINGS ” The Roaring Fork Public Education Foundation, which raises money to help cover educational costs for schools in Basalt, Carbondale and Glenwood Springs, has eliminated its traditional spring gala dinner, dance and silent auction.

Instead, it has launched an Internet-based auction. The organization’s executive director said the auction is a way to raise money without spending too much money.

Known as the Online MegaAuction or “Leap 2 Ides 4 Education,” it has been under way since Feb. 29 (leap day) and will continue until March 15 (the Ides of March).

Nearly 233 items are being offered, including a wide variety of goods, services, travel opportunities and more. Or, as executive director Irene Friedman put it in an e-mailed announcement, “From Glenwood Caverns to Machu Picchu, from fine dining to Avalanche tickets, from massage to vasectomy, jewelry to Sonicares, from lark to luck.”

All proceeds go toward Innovate Teaching and Professional Development grants, which are handed out by the education foundation to support more than 400 teachers throughout the Roaring Fork School District.

The auction can be found at the foundation’s website, http://www.rfpef.cmarket.com; Friedman can be reached at 379-6569.
