We can prevent drilling

Dear Editor:White River National Forest Supervisor Maribeth Gustafson says that “Ultimately, we cannot prohibit natural gas drilling on public lands.” (Aspen Times, Jan. 31.)Well, ultimately she’s wrong. She might not be able to prohibit natural gas drilling on some lands the Forest Service administers, but We the People can certainly band together and demand that oil and gas leasing (and drilling and the associated trashing of the land) be prohibited from huge swath of lands under the control of the federal government. We ought to do just that. And if Ms. Gustafson really wants to be a steward of natural resources, she’ll figure out a way to help us.Woody HesselbarthFort Collins
