Water is life

Dear Editor:

I am urging a yes vote on Pitkin County Ballot 1A because water is life in the west. Water is fundamental. Water is our most precious natural resource. For a cost of $10 on every $10,000 of spending subject to sales tax, Pitkin County citizens will be investing in drought and climate-change preparedness, water quality and water quantity protection, habitat and wetlands restoration, and investing in our recreation based resort economy; peaceful river trails, kayaking, rafting, and fly fishing.

While there are naysayers, preaching a hands off, what-me-worry approach, ignoring the very real threats to our water security their arguments are akin to those who ignored economic realities, believing that as long as the market was up, no one should worry about federal deficits, the housing bubble, or what kind of products, derivatives, or loans were being traded.

With the same foresight and stewardship that our citizens used to begin our open space programs so long ago; recognizing that when you value something you should invest in it, knowing that our water resources are both finite, fragile and coveted by a thirsty front-range, I ask Pitkin County voters to join me in voting yes on Referendum 1A on Nov. 4 to preserve and protect healthy rivers and streams.

With sincerely thanks, and I am available at 925-5366 to answer any questions.
