Staff report

If you’re up on Ajax today and see a few skiers who look like they’ve skied nearly 40 miles, they have.

The annual Grand Traverse ski race from Crested Butte to Aspen started at midnight Friday and races will be rolling into the finish line at the base of Lift 1A all morning.

The two-person teams have seven to 16 hours to complete the jaunt across the Elk Mountain range; the course has an elevation game of 7,800 feet. There are four cutoff points, and the last is racers have to be at the Aspen Mountain boundary checkpoint by 4 p.m.

The top three in the men, women and co-ed categories will be recognized at the podium ceremony at 2 p.m. at the base of 1A.
