Warm weather means an early opening for Maroon Creek Road

Maroon Creek Road will open Saturday, earlier than had been planned, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

“Warm temperatures in March have allowed the road to dry out significantly, making it safe enough for us to open it up a little early,” said recreation manager Martha Moran.

The road, which provides access to the Maroon Bells area, usually doesn’t open until Memorial Day weekend. The entrance station won’t be open so a fee won’t be collected. However, the Forest Service will have a “suggested donation of $5” to offset the cost of opening early, according to a press release.

Full services at the Maroon Bells Scenic Area will begin on Saturday, May

29. Vehicles will then pay a use fee of $10 per vehicle that is good for five days. A new information center will open Memorial Day weekend. Daily interpretive programs will begin in mid-June along with weekly evening programs.

Bus service from Aspen Highlands to Maroon Lake will begin on Sunday, June 13. Day users will be required to use the bus between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The cost is $5.50 per person.

The Silver Queen campground will be open, with full services, on a first-come, first-serve basis at a cost of $15 per night starting this Saturday, the Forest Service said. The Silver Bar and Silver Bell campgrounds will be open for Memorial Day weekend on a first-come, first-served basis. The campgrounds can be reserved after June 1.
