Voting for safe roads

Dear Editor:

Counties are responsible for the “health, safety, and welfare” of those who live within its county boundaries. It is a role that county commissioners take seriously.

A major role for county government is the design, construction, preservation, and maintenance of its county road system. Pitkin County has completed an Asset Management Plan that establishes a program and a timetable for a road system that meets the needs and demands of Pitkin County residents, part time homeowners, and visitors for the “quality of life” they all support.

Although roads are always a high line item in the county budget, competition among county priorities becomes an issue when difficult choices must be made. Items with a dedicated fund, however, such as the funds requested in ballot issue 1B on your ballot, are committed to the tasks identified.

The passage of ballot issue 1B will insure that funding for road maintenance and construction is secure.

Not only will the passage of ballot issue 1B insure appropriate and adequate current standards for our county road system will be maintained, but it will also provide the necessary funding needed to take actions to prevent the deterioration to our road system that will occur without appropriate maintenance and that will, at some future date, cost more to repair and replace.

Vote yes for ballot issue 1B ” vote yes for Pitkin County roads.

Pitkin County commissioner
