Voters asked to pony up for new fire station

Aspen Times Staff

The Aspen Fire Protection District will ask voters this spring to approve a $14 million bond issue for the construction of a new fire station near the Aspen Business Center and an overhaul of its existing headquarters downtown. The election will be May 2.All registered voters within the 87-square-mile district are eligible to vote; the election will take place at the downtown fire station on Hopkins Avenue. Absentee ballots also will be available at the station.District officials and volunteer firefighters have been studying future needs for the past several years; they have settled on a plan to build a new substation on a 65,000-square-foot lot to be purchased at the North 40/ABC. The new station will serve areas west of Castle Creek. The bond also will pay for a significant redevelopment of the Hopkins Avenue station, which will continue to provide a home for The Thrift Shop, as well. The bond issue proposal comes at a time when the district is debt-free and has the fourth-lowest mill levy for fire protection in Colorado, according to the election committee that has formed to promote the ballot issue. The new debt would mean $64.54 annual property taxes for every $1 million in assessed residential value, or $6.55 per year per $100,000 in assessed residential value.
