Vote to protect our water

Dear Editor:

As your state senator, a member of the legislative Water Resources Review Committee and a Pitkin County resident, I fully support a yes vote on Pitkin County Referendum 1A, Healthy Rivers and Streams.

There has never been a more important time for local communities to stand up with strength and resources to protect Western Slope water as planning for drought, climate change, Front Range population demands and energy development are all converging on the most coveted of our natural resources: water.

I applaud Pitkin County, as a headwaters community, for taking a forward-thinking leadership role to protect our fisheries, aquatic habitats and natural environment.

Traditional Western Slope industries such as agriculture, hunting, fishing and tourism are based on reliable and plentiful water resources. Water-based recreation, gold medal fly fishing, rafting, kayaking and scenic river hikes are fundamental to our quality of life and a thriving resort economy. Voting yes on 1A is a timely and proactive approach to protecting in perpetuity the values we all hold so dear.

Additionally, I am urging a no vote on state ballot question No. 52 because it severely injures water interests by stripping hundreds of millions of dollars from the Department of Natural Resources water programs.
