Vote for AVH

Dear Editor:It must have been with great pride in September 1891, when Citizens’ Hospital opened its doors in Aspen. It was through the efforts, generosity, and sacrifice of Pitkin County residents that we built our first hospital. Since then the citizens of Pitkin County have stepped up on numerous occasions, through good times and bad, to continue their commitment to provide quality healthcare for our community. Community support has built three hospitals since 1891. Today, the proposed redevelopment of our current hospital will bring Aspen Valley Hospital firmly into the 21st century to meet industry standards, patient requirements, and the needs of future generations. The history of Aspen Valley Hospital parallels the history of Aspen and Pitkin County. No one likes increased taxes, particularly during difficult economic times. However, Pitkin County citizens have historically stepped to the plate when times were tough to support their belief in the community’s need for quality healthcare. Now is not the time to step back and refuse to take the next step. We currently have a 33-year-old hospital that has served us well, but hospital healthcare has changed dramatically in those 33 years, requiring a reconfiguration of the physical plant to accommodate today’s medical services delivery and patient care. Let’s not be less bold than our predecessors. Let’s support the effort to make a 21st century hospital possible. Please join me and vote “yes” on 5A & 5B.
