Vote for art

Dear Editor:

In the past few weeks, I have been reading the opinions of Aspen locals on the topic of the new location for the Aspen Art Museum, surprised at the controversy it has caused.

Since my visits to the art museum in elementary school, I have taken a vested interest in art, and the art museum has become an invaluable resource. The museum has brought artwork from around the world and continues to provide hands-on experience for students interested in the arts.

The Young Curators of the Roaring Fork program makes curators out of high school students. They are presented with the challenge to curate a show from the work of other students, giving both young artists and aspiring curators an invaluable opportunity. For two years my work was featured in the show, and this year I have participated as one of the student curators, and the experience has been life changing.

The new art museum would revitalize Galena Plaza while maintaining a cohesive relationship with the neighboring buildings. The design by Shigeru Ban Architects is a reflection of Aspen’s breathtaking natural environment and a testament to the city’s prominence as a cultural hub. I couldn’t be more excited about the new museum’s setting and open atmosphere.

I urge voters to help continue and strengthen the benefits our local art museum has to offer. The AAM is not asking for taxpayer money; it doesn’t even ask for admission fees. I don’t have the right to vote until summer, so I’m counting on all who can to educate themselves on what this proposal means for the community as a whole.

Also, please stop by the museum to see the YCRF student exhibition. “Glitchery” opens on Friday, April 17, from 4 to 7 p.m.
