Vote for a voice

Dear Editor:Roaring Fork River Valley residents, we are getting a second opportunity to vote for a system of home rule that will enable our side of Eagle County to really be represented. I know many voters feel that the current system work has worked fine in the past, but we are very removed from those days. Our little piece of Eagle County is not being served as it deserves to be. All you have to do is look around and you will see changes happening in which you have had little or nothing to say. It is impossible for the commissioners of Eagle County, who govern an incredible complex and large chunk of the world in the Vail Valley, to represent us as they do their constituents over there. … Common sense will tell you that!In the last election, 80 percent of the voters on our side voted in favor of home rule! The problem is that many, many of the voters who didn’t vote were from our side! That should tell you how disenfranchised our voters feel … they didn’t even take time to vote at all! We have to have those votes this time around. An affirmative vote doesn’t automatically change our world … but it continues the process. If we don’t even give it a chance, we will never know if it could have a positive aid in governance of the Roaring Fork River Valley side.It really is time to change this antiquated system of representation, which the early lawmakers could never have envisioned as becoming so unfair. Much has changed through time, and our valley desperately needs a more fair and representative voice. Home rule will give us that voice; it will give us a stronger and balanced government that will represent the Roaring Fork Valley resident on an equal basis with our brothers and sisters in the Eagle River Valley. Please send a yes vote in today … don’t let this chance pass you by. It might never come again, and we will have to live with the consequences for a very, very long time.Willard and Anne ClapperEmma
