Volunteers needed to help build Snyder Park wetland

Aspen Times Staff Report

Volunteers are needed Saturday to help Aspen’s parks department construct a wetland at Snyder Park in the east end.

Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers is recruiting workers to create a 1-acre wetland, in part by planting native wetland plants and shrubs on the margin of a pond.

The wetland will provide wildlife habitat and improve fish habitat. It will be part of the department’s new approach to park design, under which the department includes areas of native ecosystems in urban parks.

David Hamilton of RFOV said his group is hoping to get between 60 and 100 volunteers for the project. There will be work suitable for children as well as adults. “This is a good project for the whole family,” Hamilton said.

He said volunteers should register by telephone before the event, so RFOV will know how many workers to anticipate. Registered volunteers will be told when to meet and given other information.

Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers and the project’s partner organizations will provide tools, materials and leadership. Dinner will be provided at the end of the day.

Also helping with the project will be the Roaring Fork Conservancy, the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies, and the Roaring Fork Watershed Coalition.
