Dear Editor:When mayoral candidate Tim Semrau declared that his favorite book is “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand, he chose to express his political philosophy by associating himself with Rand’s views. Scott Writer’s objection (letters, May 2) to my having written that “Rand’s ‘objectivism’ philosophy holds that the only legitimate functions of government are the military and the police and that all human progress stems from individual greed” is nothing more than a defense of books in general and an objection to “book burning” – sentiments with which I thoroughly agree. However, books do sometimes express odious ideas, and there’s no harm in pointing that out.Viva books.Sy ColemanAspen
